Master Roger Machado is a 7th Degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Coral (Red/Black) Belt with over 45 years experience in BJJ. Nephew to the founders of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Carlos Gracie and Helio Gracie, Roger was born and raised in Brazil learning Jiu-Jitsu from a very young age.
Under the supervision of his Uncle Carlos Gracie Sr. and Uncle Helio Gracie, Roger and his brothers studied the art of Jiu-Jitsu alongside their cousins Rickson Gracie, Rolls Gracie, Carlos Gracie Jr, Renzo Gracie, Crolin Gracie, Royler Gracie, and Royce Gracie. Roger achieved the rank of black belt in 1989 and the Master level rank of coral belt in 2021, an achievement earned after 30+ years teaching at the black belt level. Master Roger Machado is one of only a handful of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teachers in the world who have earned the rank of coral belt.
In the late 80's the Machado Brothers moved to the US to teach with their cousins The Gracies in the legendary Gracie garage in Torrance, CA. After a few years in the US, the Machados would go on to establish RCJ Machado Jiu-Jitsu in 1990 in Redondo Beach, CA. Since then, the Machados have been instrumental in spreading the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the US and around the world. Roger and his brothers have taught Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to several martial arts legends such as Chuck Norris and Guru Dan Inosanto (Bruce Lee’s Protoge), along with celebrities Keanu Reeves, Ashton Kutcher, comedian Joe Rogan, and many more.
For many years Roger competed alongside his brothers at the highest levels of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. As a family the Machado Brothers are known for their success in ADCC (Abu Dhabi Combat Club) Submission Wrestling World Championships, Pan American Games, the Brazilian National Championships and many more. Currently Roger's brother Rigan is the ambassador for The Jiu-Jitsu World League and his brother Jean Jacques Machado is an advisor to ADCC.
Currently, Roger resides in Los Angeles and is the owner and head instructor of the Roger Machado Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Pasadena, CA. Roger is an avid yoga practitioner and is known for his calm "Zen" like approach to teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Roger is a lifelong vegetarian and advocate of healthy living. In addition to teaching at the Roger Machado Jiu-Jitsu Academy, Roger teaches private lessons and travels around the world teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu seminars.
